Principal Update

“Mom, we had another sub today!” .  That may be a statement that has come up at the dinner table lately and there is a good reason why.  Denver Public Schools has put in strategic Professional Development resources for our team this year, and this requires our 1st-3rd Grade Teachers to be out of the classroom once a month for a half-day.  During this time, teachers are receiving professional development in the area of Early Literacy.

In addition, there may be days during the year in which they are receiving professional development focused on our curriculum. For example, last Tuesday we participated in a full day of curriculum training for our Lucy Calkins Literacy Curriculum with our fellow peers at C3, Bromwell and Slavens.

Our 4th/5th Grade Team will also have various opportunities throughout the year to do the same.  As always, please contact your child’s teacher with any questions.

Destination Imagination News

Destination Imagination is a nationwide educational program in which student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at a tournament.  Each challenge that a team chooses takes problem-solving and creativity and mixes it with a strong element of teamwork.

Students who choose this after-school activity love creative challenges and problem-solving.  Working as a team becomes a necessity for these creative students. While this is often not easy to achieve, team managers help guide these unique students to work as a group to achieve a common goal.  All activities are student-led and only facilitated by the managers.  In fact, any interference from parents or managers is forbidden!

If you are interested in learning more, please CLICK HERE, fill out the form inside this link and be on the lookout for a parent meeting to be held in late September or early October.

Thanks,

PTA News

Thank you to all the families who have joined the Cory PTA in the past few weeks. We are now up to 73 members! We would also like to thank everyone who has volunteered for our various committees. We are going strong in most but we are still looking for help with the Cory Carnival and the Cory Annual Auction.

The Cory Carnival is fast approaching and the committee is in need of volunteers to work and donated items for some of the booths.  You and/or your older children can sign-up here to work or donate.  Wristbands that grant access to all games are $10 in advance and $15 at the event.

The PTA needs two special someones willing to Co-chair our Annual Spring Auction. Haven Smith has agreed to be Event Logistics/Ticket Sales Co-chair.  We are now looking for a Communications Co-chair (event marketing) and an Acquisitions Co-chair (sponsorships and auction items).   This is our biggest fundraiser of the year.  Please contact Haven Smith  if you are able to Co-chair.  We have lots of support, we just need some fearless leaders!

Finally, Friends of Cory has just finished its first week of the annual campaign. THANK YOU to all who have given to our wonderful school!

Friends of Cory Update

It’s the end of the first week of our Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign and we are at $9,000! Thank you to everyone who has given so far.  Your contributions help ensure that Cory remains one of the best elementary schools in Denver.  If you have not made your donation yet, please donate today! We only have 4 more weeks to reach our $65,000 goal. Let’s make this happen for our kids!

In this week’s Friday Folders you have the opportunity to involve your child in the Friends of Cory fundraising effort.  There is a generic letter that can be filled out and sent to family and friends.  Many grandparents, aunts, uncles and godparents would love to invest in your child’s education.  It is so much more rewarding than giving them another toy AND there is no selling.  If you need more letters, please contact Haven Smith.  Below is also some language you can copy/paste/customize to send your favorite people by email.

Dear <Family/Friends Name>,

I am writing to tell you about my school, Cory Elementary, and to ask you to donate to our fundraising program, Friends of Cory.  I love going to Cory because my teachers care about me and I learn new things every day. My school helps me grow into the person I want to be.  Cory is great because of the support we get from parents, family and friends for the things we need that Denver Public Schools can’t provide. This support means I get more attention and it is easier for me to learn. Would you consider making a donation to support my amazing school?  You can donate right now at http://cory.dpsk12.org/supportcory/annual-giving/.  There are also instructions on that page if you would rather send a check.  Thank you so much for supporting my education and helping me grow!

Sincerely,

<Student’s Name>

Calling all 5th Grade Families: Help us Stuff the teacher lounge with treats on Tuesday September 20th!

So now that you rule the school let’s show them how it’s done.  5th graders please bring your favorite treats to “stuff” the teacher lounge on Tuesday September 20th.   Treats might include:  a box of granola or snack bars, bag of chips, package of candy bars, chocolate bars, box of k-cups (we have a keurig one of our families donated), nuts, frozen dinners, box of microwave popcorn, six pack of sodas, waters, sparkling waters or any other treat you can dream up.

Kiddos should bring their treat to the table by the couches before school.  They may also write note in addition to or instead of a treat.  Note cards will be available before school.

Come on Cory 5th Grade Families let’s show our LOVE!

 Colorado Proud Day
We celebrated Colorado Proud Day here at Cory today by having a chef demonstration of how to make cucumber and tomato salad. All our kids loved sampling the salad which was made with vegetables that were all grown in Denver!
Also our proud 4th Grader Coloradans enjoyed time in the garden, picking kale and preparing it to be baked into Kale chips.  They were then able to enjoy it as an afternoon snack.
