Parent Post – September 29, 2017

Posted September 29, 2017

Hello Cory Parents,

Next week, on October 4th, we will celebrate International Walk to School Day! “Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states– participate every October.” Please join us by walking to school on October 4th!
Our Lost and Found is growing again.  Please take a moment to check Lost and Found for coats, water bottles, shoes, lunch boxes, etc.  Lost and Found is located just outside of the gym.  At the end of every month, any unclaimed items will be donated to the Denver Indian Center.

October is also College and Career Readiness Month. Staff will be wearing College gear every Friday during the month of October. Please encourage your student to wear any college gear they may have on Friday to celebrate college spirit and the educational journey towards college!

In staff news, we are getting ready for the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented conference in mid-October. Representatives from each grade level will be attending the conference to continue to grow and deepen our practices in GT education. Sessions include work on Depth and Complexity in Mathematics, Transformative GT Leadership, The Power of Arts Integration in GT, Strategies To improve Critical Thinking, as well as many, many more. We look forward to learning how we as an integrated GT/HGT magnet school can further build, develop and strengthen our program.

Finally, this week parents of 4th and 5th grade students will be receiving their child’s PARCC scores from the state testing that was administered last Spring. Please check your child’s Friday folder for these results.

Have a wonderful and restful weekend!

Regards,

Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign 2017-18

We are in our second week of the Friends of Cory campaign and we need your support!

Our goal is to raise $65,000 with 100% student family participation.
With 360 families at Cory, we can do it!

As you consider your contribution to the Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign, remember every dollar counts and benefits your child. Past donations have ranged from $10 to $10,000. Please give as generously as your budget will allow. The best way to grow the potential of our children is to invest in their education!

Your contribution supports:

  • Paraprofessional educators
  • Full-time Music, Art, and PE teachers
  • School events and enrichment programs
  • Technology upgrades in the classroom and for the school

Participate today on the Cory website!

In 2016-17, parent-led fundraising generated $246,045. As our second largest fundraising effort of the year, Friends of Cory contributions accounted for 30% of our annual PTA budget. Here is the breakdown:

  • Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign: Sept/Oct – A 100% tax deductible annual direct giving campaign. Historically Cory’s second-largest fundraiser, this campaign runs with no overhead, requires no parent volunteer hours and is the easiest way to give to Cory. Donations can be in any dollar amount…none too small or too large. ($74,407 in 2016-17)

  • Cory Annual Auction: April – This fun Cory-wide celebration is our largest fundraiser of the year. Parent volunteering to plan and carry out the auction is critical to its success, and a great way to get to know other Cory parents. Attendee contributions are partially tax-deductible, based on the value of items purchased. ($158,611 in 2016-17)

  • Other
    • Book Fair: November – A percentage of proceeds go to Cory in specific departments. ($4,664 in 2016-17)
    • Grocery Cards: Year round – reloadable gift cards for a variety of local grocery stores (Safeway, King Soopers, etc) from which 5% of every dollar spent comes back to Cory. Cards are easy to reload and have no associated fees. Cards are available through Cory PTA ($3,820 in 2016-17)
    • Box Tops: Year round – Box Tops for Education labels on popular packaged food items can be clipped and submitted to classroom teachers. Each box top generates 10 cents for Cory. ($543 in 2016-17)
    • Cory Dines Out: Year round – monthly events at local restaurants in which a percentage of sales are donated back to Cory. A great way to connect with other Cory families, enjoy a meal out, and support our school. ($4,000 in 2016-17)

These efforts generate approximately $550 per student
to help fund essential staff, programs and resources!

Support Cory by donating today on the Cory website!
