Friends of Cory Update- WE DID IT!

Congratulations Cory families!  Because of your generosity, we have reached our Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign goal of $65,000.  We also had a record-setting 80% family participation rate.  Thank you to this wonderful community for supporting your neighborhood school.  The teachers, staff and students are so very grateful to you.

Special thanks to our parents who volunteered in this effort:  Dana Kang, Shahla Hebets, Brandy Mello, Bill Esbenshade, Deanne Deeg, Susie Moutray, Deborah Freeman, Cindy Giullian, Sam Powell and Jen Allison.   Thank you as well to the teachers who participated in the Friends of Cory video and to Dawn Eddy, Alison Walker and Principal Harris for their tireless efforts helping us send our communications.

Thank you for “Growing Together”  with Friends of Cory!

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Continental Breakfast Tuesday October 18th

Calling all  1st – 5th grade families.  You are invited to sign up  to bring in something yummy for a teacher appreciation continental breakfast for our teacher to enjoy the morning of Tuesday October 18th.  Just signup and then bring your goodies up to the teachers lounge on the second floor.  We are asking you to bring your treats between 7:45 and 8am.  We know it’s early, but it allows our teachers to enjoy breakfast before they have to be in their classrooms.  Todd Moore, our Enrichment Coordinator at Cory has graciously offered to have kiddos whose folks are bringing something early for the breakfast to sign in and hang out with Discovery Link (previously known as Kaleidoscope).  Just sign up for a childcare spot on the sign up genius.

Let’s show our teachers how much we care!  Click here to sign – up.

Thanks – Dana Kang ( mother a 4th grader at Cory)

Updates from Cory’s Library!

Exciting news!  DPS now has an eBook system set in place for elementary school students.  Students can access eBooks from a PC or Mac computer.  You may use any browser – simply enter http://dpsk12.lib.overdrive.com.  Students log into the Overdrive system by entering their student ID number and their 8-digit birthdate (the same username and password that they use for their Google accounts).  Once they choose a book to check-out, they click on “Read”.  They are allowed to have the books for 2 weeks.  Students may also download the free Overdrive app onto a tablet (app.overdrive.com).  I will be demonstrating how to use the eBook system during library time over the next few weeks.

I also wanted to share a great resource regarding cyberbullying.  During 4th and 5th grade library/technology time we have been discussing this important issue.  Common Sense Media has developed a great guide for parents to use around the concept of cyberbullying: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/cyberbullying .  Check it out!

Thanks,  Dawn Miller  Teacher Librarian/Technology Teacher

Concert Opportunities

Looking for a fun concert-going experience for all ages? Check out the African Children’s Choir from Uganda at 7pm on Wednesday, October 19th at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Centennial (8545 E Dry Creek Rd, Englewood, Colorado 80112). Children aged 7 to 10 years old will perform their delightful African tunes accompanied by ethnic instrumentation. The program features well-loved children’s songs, hand clapping, traditional spirituals and contemporary tunes. The choirs’ mission is to generate hope, healing and justice for the innocent and vulnerable children of Africa caught up in areas of conflict and crisis, to enable these children to become ChangeMakers in Africa.
The concert is free and open to all and will be the second of Good Shepherd’s Music with a Mission Concert Series, which raises funds and awareness for mission organizations while offering outstanding musical performances to the Centennial community. Donations will be accepted at the performance to support African Children’s Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development programs.
Ms. Polete will be performing with the Cherry Creek Chorale in the upcoming concert “The Road Home” on Friday, October 21st and Saturday October 22nd at 7:30pm. The concerts take place just down the road from Cory Elementary at Bethany Lutheran Church. Additional information and tickets are available by visiting the event page: http://www.cherrycreekchorale.org/event/2290-2/ Hope to see you all there!
