Extended Learning and Community Schools

Good afternoon Cory Community,

We wanted to take a moment to clarify the communication you received earlier today regarding access to the playground after school dismissal.  As a licensed afterschool program, Discovery Link will often be using a sectioned off area of the playground during programming time.  It is not our intent to exclude any of the Cory community from accessing the playground. We do ask that you be aware of sectioned-off areas when Discovery Link is outside and understand that the purpose is to meet licensing requirements. We thank Sam for continuing to provide high quality programming in both Discovery Link as well as the Cory Neighborhood Center.

If you have additional questions about licensing requirements, please do not hesitate to reach out to Sam, our Associate Director of Programming, Alicia Lamfers (alicia_lamfers@dpsk12.org ), or myself. We would be happy to answer your questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Mary Varveris
Director
Department of Extended Learning and Community Schools

Cory Elementary School Birthday Celebration Policy

Due to the increasing number of allergies within the school and the number of sweet treats coming into classrooms on a regular basis, and concerns brought to the school’s CSC (Collaborative School Committee) and SLT (School Leadership Team), Cory has developed a new policy to celebrate children on their birthday.

We are excited to recognize a child’s birthday in a way that is:

  • Celebratory of each individual
  • Minimizes the amount of sweets entering the classrooms
  • Is mindful of the variety of allergies across the school
  1. All classrooms will recognize the birthday child in a way that celebrates that child as a valued member of the class community. This can take the form of a student created birthday book, student celebration paper chain, the birthday chair or another way to celebrate the student. This is an opportunity for every child in the classroom to write or say something complimentary about the birthday boy/girl.
  2. We ask that no sweet treats come to school for birthdays; instead we will be recognizing the child as a special member of the community. Summer birthdays can also be celebrated by the classroom community either at the half birthday or in June (this will be determined by the classroom teacher).
  3. Students will receive a book from Cory on their birthday as recognition of their special day. Teachers will send students down to the office where the child can choose a book from an assortment of grade appropriate books that are placed on the special Birthday Bookcase in the office.
  4. Donations to the school Birthday Bookcase, in a student’s name or anonymously, are welcome in either book form or as a monetary donation!

Cory Semantics Club/Team 2017-18

Come one, come all to the Cory Semantics Club! We have a really fun club at Cory for those 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who really like spelling OR just would like to become better spellers. We take part in the district spelling bees during the school year and the top 10 performing spellers get to attend the bees at any given competition. Cory Semantics Club meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the library and we are always looking for new members to join in the fun of learning words, words, words with many different derivations! It is fun to see how heavily influenced our language is by world languages around the globe! If you are interested, please send an email to Grace Hopley, Semantics Coach at grace_hopley@dpsk12.org to sign up for the club. Study materials will be prepared for the students who sign up by email. Everyone in grades 3-5 are welcome to join! The first meeting of Semantics Club will be Tuesday, August 29th in the library. Please sign up by email before you come so that the office knows you are coming. GO Cory Spellers!!
