MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

What a fantastic beginning of the school year! Cory students are working hard each day on rigorous tasks, projects, and creative problem solving! We are challenging students to have a growth mindset and set personal goals as they move into this new year of school. We are encouraging students to be an active participant in their learning.

We would like to invite parents to continue to partner with us in the education of your children. We know you do this daily through conversations about school, reading with your students and helping your students with learning. We hope that you also get involved by volunteering at the school and joining the PTA and the CSC.

We would like to extend our appreciation to our parents and families who are taking all precautions when it comes to your child feeling ill or having possibly been exposed to someone with Covid.  It is through our parents and community that we will keep each other safe and keep our doors open.

Traffic Concerns:
I need the community’s partnership to ensure that dismissal and arrival is safe for our students and families.  We have seen an increase of unsafe driving, families not using the crosswalk, and students running in between cars at the Kiss and Go.

Kiss and Go Expectations:

  • Please arrive at 8:05 for arrival
  • Please arrive at 3:20 for dismissal – please be mindful that C3 dismisses 5 minutes before we do. It takes the students at least 3-5 minutes to walk to Kiss and Go so please be mindful of the time you arrive for dismissal.
  • Please remain in your car and continue to move forward so there are no gaps in the kiss and go line.
  • Please use the crosswalk when crossing Iowa.
  • Please do not have students run in between cars to meet you on the other side of the kiss and go.

Parking Lot:
We are also seeing a lack of patience and aggressive driving in the parking lot.  We need to partner together to ensure that our students are safe entering and exiting the school.

  • Please use the parking lot if you are going to park and walk your student to school.
  • Please do not use this location to drop off your student if you are not parking- this creates a back-up on Florida.
  • Please be mindful when backing up to watch for children and adults.
  • Please do not drive around cars in the parking lot that are waiting to park.
  • Please be mindful of speed and aggressive driving- I understand the parking lot is a frustration point for many families, but we must remain composed and aware of driving safe.

I appreciate the families who have reached out with suggestions to improve these areas.  In the coming weeks, we will have some changes to these locations because the safety of our students and families are very important.  I am asking that we partner together to ensure everyone stays safe.   I have requested for DPD to be present during these times to support with safer driving and street crossing habits.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ms. Wieser if you have suggestions or concerns.

District-Wide Social Emotional Screener Passive Consent:

As part of our effort to support the Whole Child, our school will be implementing a universal social and emotional screening for students. Universal social and emotional screening can provide a fair and impartial way of looking at how students are progressing in their social and emotional development.  Screenings can also help identify areas where school personnel can improve or adjust our supports. Universal social and emotional screening is NOT an assessment or an evaluation. Instead, screenings are a useful tool to help identify students who may need extra social or emotional support. Denver Public Schools currently uses a social and emotional screening questionnaire called the Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BESS). The online tool takes approximately ten minutes to complete and consists of 28 questions for the student to answer. The social and emotional screening may occur two or three times over the course of the school year. Repeated screening helps us determine if the supports we provide to students are effective in meeting their needs.

You have the right, upon request, to review the questions on the screener. If you would like to review the questions on the social and emotional screener, please contact the representative at your school: Rachel Wilberg, rachel_wilberg@dpsk12.org.

You also have the option to EXEMPT your child from participating. If you DO NOT want your child to participate in social and emotional screening, please indicate so by signing this form or emailing rachel_wilberg@dpsk12.org.
If we do not receive an OPT-OUT form or email from you by Sunday Sept 19th, 2021, we will assume you are choosing to have your child participate in social and emotional screening.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,

Joan Wieser
