MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Cory Families,

We are finally wrapping up this rollercoaster of a year! We want to extend a HUGE thank-you to our families for your support and encouragement, for cheering us on when we didn’t know if we would make it through this year, and for the endless gifts of support! Everything you do for our staff helps us to serve your children the best we can. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Another shout out to the PTA for their support in raising so much money through the auction and the amazing community for supporting our goals! A huge thank you to Naurin Gilger and Danielle Gooden for leading and organizing the auction.

Thank you all who joined us to celebrate our 5th grade students! Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring our continuation efforts! We will miss them all and wish them well on their new journey.

We are making many changes for next year. Please read the next few sections carefully so you know what to expect for the 2021-22 school year.

Staffing Updates

We are sad to announce that we are having some staff transitions this year. These staff members are leaving the Cory Community. We are excited for their new journeys and experiences.

– Annie Witwer: GT Teacher
– Hyun-Jung Behmer: Para Professional
– Betsy Sturges: Literacy Intervention

Though we are disappointed to say goodbye to members of our community, we are thrilled with the new folks that are joining our team and excited to help some of our current staff develop their skills in new roles!

– Madelyn Sherrill: 4/5 Math Teacher
– We are still actively hiring for a GT teacher, 2 paraprofessionals, and a Restorative Justice Cordinator

Next year, we are going to be supporting 2 STEAM projects at each grade level.  We have purchased new iPads, a 3D printer, and tool kits to increase student engagement and design thinking opportunities within existing content units. Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Alexander are partnering with grade level teachers to build these opportunities for all students at Cory.  We appreciate all the support from the PTA and the community as it was purchased with the paddle raise money at the auction.

Grade level teachers will be compacting and accelerating each unit of study to incorporate project-based learning, student voice/choice, and the opportunity to engage in design thinking.  Next year, we want to work with community partnerships to increase the real-world connections to learning in the classroom.

At Cory, we recognize that all of our students have a variety of strengths and learning styles as well as areas for growth. In order to effectively engage all of our students as mathematical thinkers and problem solvers, we believe that it is important to provide targeted, differentiated support to individuals and small groups. We group our students for mathematics instruction in order to effectively meet these needs through a compacted model.

These groupings are flexible and are driven by analysis of student data and pre-testing before every unit for all grade levels. We want to ensure that if students have gaps within standards that we can be very intentional with programing.  Through this model, we are able to scaffold, support and accelerate depending on students’ needs in mathematics.   Our goal is to develop a deep love of mathematics in our students and to ensure that all students make significant growth in their mathematical understanding.
