Hello Cory Families!

A little news from the Chicken Coop and Garden for the month of April 2022.

Chicken Coop News

The hens are laying like crazy with the warm weather.  Soon, we will be able to remove the plexiglass windows so they can get lots of fresh air.  Everyone is enjoying the new stone landscaping.  Your students love coming to the coop each day.  Look at the happiness on their faces!  And the chickens are just as happy too!

Cory Garden News

Last week was Earth Week, and boy did our students contribute to the efforts of sustainability and caring for our earth.

The classrooms were very busy readying the raised beds for planting. Prepping the beds requires pulling all weeds, layering with compost, and turning the soil once the compost has been placed.

Here is what the students have done these past two weeks:

  • 280 students have spent time in the garden the past two weeks
  • Weeding 17 raised beds
  • Hauling 10 yards of compost (1 cubic yard weighs 1250 lbs.)
  • Planting over 330 flower bulbs (Peonies, tulips, Dahlias, Gladiolus, Lilies, and Irises)
  • Planting beets, sweet peas, carrots, and radishes

As Denver Urban Garden says: “gardens are places of experimentation and joy, requiring no advanced degrees or training for their human participants….”

 Cory Derby Highlights

  • Through the support of our community, the Cory Derby raised more than $280,000 (after expenses), making it the most successful fundraising event in Cory’s history! This amount far exceeded our goals, and we are truly humbled by everyone’s generosity and participation.
  • We were thrilled to enjoy the evening with 52 Cory staff members and their guests, which is the most that has attended any auction!
  • Special thanks to Mr. Doyle for emceeing the Run for the Roses game! Second grade raised the most money for the game and will receive a Derby Pizza Party! Thank you to our parent participants and to the teachers who participated, including Mrs. Golden, Mrs. Wilsted and Ms. Molina!
  • Thank you to Mark Smiley for taking these photos throughout the night! We will also share the paddle raise video that featured Cory students in Friday’s Parent Post.

We Love Our Cory Community!

  • We couldn’t have raised this astounding amount without our Cory families! Thank you for your generous donations, for bidding on silent and live auction items, and for becoming one of our 103 Star Family sponsors
  • Thank you to Jill Ozarski and the countless families who contributed to the Class Projects category! Projects included everything from Cory Hole boards and Adirondack chairs to one-of-a-kind pieces of art and even artwork with our Cory chickens. These items reflected the creativity of our community, and they raised over $5,000 for the school!
  • We appreciate everyone who is hosting and attending Buy-a-Shares, and thank you to the Cory staff who are hosting Teacher Treasure experiences for our kids!
