Principal Update
I hope you enjoyed the past two Snow Days with your children. Those are the days when the days stand still and the only thing to do is make memories. I am sure you were able to make some great ones and are able make many more next week during Spring Break!
We have some exciting news to announce. We have a brand new Cory Cougar in our family! Mrs. Guerrero has had her baby today! Oliver Louis Guerrero was born today, 3/25/16, which happened to be his daddy’s birthday as well! He weighed 6lb. 10oz. and the family is doing great!
Thank you to all of you who have made sure your child is here for our PARCC testing. We have had to adjust the schedule a tad with the snow days, so please read our REVISED Cory 2016 Spring Assessment Calendar. Unfortunately, we have had many students out today and at the beginning of the week for vacation, so our make-up sessions are getting larger. If I were running for President, my platform would be to partner with the travel agencies and airlines to offer cheap flights DURING scheduled breaks to help avoid all of this early vacation taking :). I digress. Our paraprofessionals will have to be pulled from their regular classroom assignments after spring break to give these make-ups. Thank you for helping us avoid this by sending your child to school everyday, but especially so on testing days (unless they are sick, of course! We want them to be healthy and ready!).
Enjoy your Spring Break and we will see everyone on Monday, April 4.
In partnership,
Jennifer Harris, Principal

Teacher Spotlight
This week we hear from Debbie Stricker from our 4/5 math team.
Q. Where did you grow up?
Although I was born in Sacramento, CA, my parents moved to Denver when I was 6 months old. Naturally I followed. I have been in Denver ever since and consider myself a native! We lived in Littleton until I was 9 and then moved to the Applewood area located somewhere between Golden, Lakewood and WheatRidge. I graduated from WheatRidge High School and went on to graduate from the University of Northern Colorado. I loved growing up in Colorado and spent a lot of time in the mountains skiing, camping, rafting, and hiking. I still enjoy most of these activities.
Q. How or why did you choose teaching?
I love learning! I spent many years in other jobs before I started teaching, but teaching is where I found my passion. When both of my kids were in school I helped in their classrooms when I could. I loved it! I found myself going back to school to get my teaching certificate and then my Masters. I have been teaching for 25 years and haven’t thought of doing anything else since!
Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
There are so many places in the world I would like to go. I have a map on my wall that I use to mark all the places I’ve been in red push pins and all the places I would like to go in green. There are so many more green pins than red!! I would love to take a couple of months and explore Europe.
Q. What book has influenced you most?
I started reading avidly when I was seven. I have read so many books in my life I that I could not even begin to decide which one influenced me the most. As I grew up different types of books influenced me. I love reading books suggested by my 4th and 5th graders. A must read is, Wonder, by RJ Palacio.
Q. What is one job you had before coming to Cory?
I started working when I was about 8 yrs. old in my parent’s restaurant, although I can’t remember ever getting a paycheck! I had many jobs before I started teaching but I think one of my favorites was working in a bike and ski shop. It was great fun and I got to ski 3-4 times a week!!
Q. What is your favorite dessert?
Hot fudge Sundae! YUM!
