PRINCIPAL UPDATE

Happy day before spring!  Winter is finally showing it’s true self (isn’t this why we all love Denver?!?!).

Our first week of PARCC Testing has gone very well and our students “did their best on the test!”.  This past week was 3rd grade English Language Arts.  Our 4th and 5th graders kick off next week’s testing and we anticipate smooth sailing with them as well.  I had sent the testing calendar out many moons ago, so wanted to take the opportunity to send it out again.  Please click Cory 2016 Spring Assessment Calendar-Parents for our Assessment Calendar for the rest of the year, including details on when volunteers can be in the building and the days to make sure your child eats a hearty breakfast.

Enjoy your weekend, only 5 more days until Spring Break!

In appreciation,

Jennifer  Harris, Principal

AUCTION

WE NEED YOUR GENEROSITY…only 2 weeks left to HELP by donating!  (Donations need to be in by March 25 to be included in the catalog).

The auction is CORY’s largest fundraiser of the year.  It raises critical funds supporting our children and school.

CONSIDER:

·      Avalanche or Rockies tickets;

·      Wine – lots of wine;

·      Restaurant Gift Cards – $100, $50, $25;

·      Whole Foods Gift Cards, or Visa Gift Cards;

·      Apple products – mini iPad, Apple Watch, iPod

We have a goal of 100 Family Sponsorship’s and we are at 20!

ANYTHING HELPS…come on Cory families…let’s surpass our goal!

It literally takes minutes and it is super easy.  Please consider this ESPECIALLY, if you are unable to attend the event.

Each $100 family that becomes a sponsor will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting Corn-Hole Contest at the auction for a GRAND PRIZE!  As well as have their name on a banner on the corner of Iowa and Steele St.

You can go to the website HERE…Or you can send a check to the school front office made out to Cory PTA.

Why wait until the last minute?  Go online now and get your event tickets, be a family sponsor or buy a teacher a ticket to the event.

DONATION DEADLINE for all items is March 25. Please visit the auction page on the Cory website or email coryauction1@gmail.com for any questions, donation forms, and a link to our sign up genius!

Want to earn money for Cory without doing a thing?

Please don’t forget to use your King Soopers and Safeway cards.  Every time you load money onto them, the stores donate 5% back to Cory!  MUCH better than selling frozen pastries!

Don’t have a card?  No problem, contact Molly Sutton at mollysutton2003@yahoo.com

Cards cost $5, but come with $5 already loaded on them (so they’re essentially free).

Grab them for your parents, friends, and co-workers- they work at any stores within the Safeway/King Soopers family (Vonn’s, City Market, etc).

News from the library!

Check out the 4th grade green screen movies!   The 4th graders have been studying ecosystems in their classrooms, and they used their knowledge to create green screen movies during library/technology time.  All students worked in small groups and researched a particular ecosystem, and then created movie scripts based on their research.  They did a fabulous job!  Click here to enjoy!

Teacher Spotlight

This week we learn more about Katie McOwen from our 4/5 math/science teacher team!

Q.  Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Huntington, West Virginia – home of the Marshall Thundering Herd and the beautiful state where everything is “Wild and Wonderful.”

Q.  How or why did you choose teaching?

In some fashion I have been working with kids, i.e., camp counselor, swim instructor, coaching, tutoring, before and whilst working toward my architecture degree.  It wasn’t until I was actually working in the architecture field that I realized I needed to be doing something that was personally more satisfying.  Educating our youth and being a doorway to the world around us is important to me for many reasons, but the best thing about teaching is it keeps me sharp, laughing everyday, and feeling forever young.

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I want to go just about everywhere!  I love to see new cultures and explore new places, and I especially love to see ancient ruins and learn about the ancient civilizations.  Some of my top places are Peru, Bolivia, Cambodia, and Ireland.

Q.  What is your favorite dessert?

While I’m not much of a dessert person, I do have a weakness for anything mint chocolate.
