Meet Mr. Chris Penny, Olympic silver medalist and Cory Parent! Mr.Penny was a member of the 1984 Rowing Team – Mens Eights. He shared his Olympic experience with the 3rd grade classrooms and helped the students see how commitment and grit can help you achieve any goal you set for yourself.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hi Cory Families,

Happy Friday!  I want to thank the PTA for purchasing picnic tables for all our students. We are excited to get the tables installed and enjoy lunch outdoors.  Our staff are excited to extend our learning spaces outside once the weather cooperates.

The PTA with the Fine Arts Committee are busy looking for wonderful art inspired opportunities for all our students to engage in.  On Tuesday, our 3-5 grade students will be attending the symphony from 9:15-1100.  Students will be back in time to get lunch and recess.  We are excited that our students get this amazing opportunity! Don’t worry! This team is working on field trips for all our students in the coming months.

As many of you all saw, DPS, in conjunction with DDPHE (Denver Department of Public Health and Environment) will be updating their mask mandate. Denver Public Schools (DPS) issued updated guidance on masks that takes effect on Monday, Feb. 28. Beginning on that date, masks will no longer be required but will be strongly recommended for all students, staff, and visitors across DPS. The social distancing and safety guardrails have also been removed so that schools can function with normal operations. The district’s health partners made this decision based on high rates of immunity and lower rates of severe disease. The district is in full compliance, across all schools and worksites, with the city’s vaccine mandate. In addition, there is a very high vaccination rate in the community – about 80% of Denver residents ages 5 and older are vaccinated.

I want to share some commitments that Cory will hold true to through this more recent mandate, as the health and safety of our school is a priority. With that in mind, staff members and students will all have a choice whether they would like to come to school with a mask or no mask. We will not force staff or students to wear masks, though we will encourage mask wearing.

I wanted to take a moment to share what I will personally be committing to:

  1. I will continue to wear a mask during most times of the day
  2. Support each and every staff member and student no matter their choice to wear a mask or not

Our vision at Cory is rooted in students first, community partnership and engagement. With that, Cory will continue to have this approach and encourage you and your students to make personal commitments that are right for you and your family. We will be supporting students any way we can, though we will not be forcing students to wear masks. Please talk to your child about your family’s choice and acceptance of others choices. It is important that we support one another and the personal choices we all have to make.  Please view this video around the changes to our safety policies.

A few reminders:

  • Report cards are viewable today through parent portal
  • Looking for a way to stay in shape while having some fun? The north gym at Merrill has been reserved on Thursday nights between 7 and 8pm for parents and staff of Cory, C3, and Merrill to play pickup basketball.  Please reach out to Tyson Sollenberger if you have any questions at Tysollenberger@gmail.com

Hi! This is Ghaith, the principal for the day!

I had a great day leading the school.  I observed in all classrooms, and I was very impressed with the great learning happening in all the rooms.  I set up for lunch and supported Mr. C in pe for a little bit.  Ms. Wieser and I had a wonderful lunch while handling important emails, parent communication and staff communication.  Thanks! Ghaith

Have a wonderful weekend!

We are looking for new volunteers to add to our chicken volunteer list.

Student grades 1st – 5th, need to be accompanied by a trained volunteer to care for the chickens.

We are hoping to get more parents, grandparents, or other old siblings involved in our program to get each grade level into the coup daily, Monday – Friday (maximum 3 students per class).

What is involved in becoming a volunteer?

  • Short volunteer training done by one of our long-time volunteers
  • Volunteer shifts are 30 minutes in length
  • Volunteer duties – supervisor students as they:
    • Feed chickens
    • Provide fresh water
    • Collect eggs
    • Turn Hemp

Discovery Link News

Enrichment Pre-Registration Information

In an effort to better support the families of DPS we have created this Pre-Registration Information sheet to help prepare families for registering for Spring Session Enrichment classes which run from April 5th, 2022- May 27th, 2022

General Information For All Families

  • Registration for Winter Session Classes will open on March 9th at 8am and run through March 23rd at 5pm.
  • Brochures for class offerings will begin to be sent out by February 28th.
  • There will be no late registration permitted. Once registration is closed regardless of space availability, registration will remain closed.
  • If during the session we have to cancel a class we will add 20-30 minutes to the last two classes of the session. If we have to cancel more than one class we will communicate to families next steps. Please note that like Discovery Link we are not obligated to refund for cancellations.
  • Please note that any registrations that have incomplete guardian contact information will be automatically rejected. This is to ensure in cases of emergency we have correct contact information.

ELCS Scholarship Policy

Each Community Partner offering classes has a class specific scholarship policy  for their programming that we hold them accountable to, and Extended Learning and Community Schools will award the scholarships for each class based on these policies (i.e. one class may offer 1 full scholarship for every 10 paid enrollments). ELCS policy will be to prioritize students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and/or students who are receiving support or services through DPS’ Homeless Education Network (HEN). Students who have already received scholarships this year will be placed on a waitlist for scholarships for this session so that more students can have access to programming.

For families that would like to explore this option please contact our Enrichment Systems Specialist at randall_geary@dpsk12.net

Refund/Credit Policy

  • In order to receive a full refund you must request to cancel your registration for class by 5pm on March 28th, 2022.
  • In order to receive a partial refund (refund minus first class and service fees associated with the class) you must request to cancel your registration by 5pm on April 7th, 2022.

In Canada in 2007 a group of  12 grade students saw a 9th grader who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.

They knew they had to be upstanders because bullying is never ok.

They decided to buy a bunch of pink shirts and hand them out to other students to wear.

By the end of that week, most of the students in the school were wearing pink shirts to show support for the Grade 9 student who was bullied.

Now it Cory’s to turn to show that bullying is never ok

Wear your pink shirt on February 23rd !
