Dear Cory Community,

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for our community.  As a community, we have faced many challenges and obstacles through the years.  I am proud that our community can take the time listen to diverse experiences, determine possible solutions and celebrate the wins for all of our students.  Thank you!

It is absolutely imperative that we are following traffic laws in our Cory Parking Lot. If you are not in a parking space you cannot park your vehicle. There was an incident this week in which we had to involve law enforcement. The incident took place during morning arrival, and was witnessed by students. Please use the kiss and go lane on Iowa Street if you are dropping students off. If you are parking, then you must be in a parking space. Another option if you want to park is to park in the neighborhood and walk your child to school. Also, you may only use handicap parking spaces if you have a handicap designation. This is a public school ground, and It is the law.  As adults we are the first examples for all of our children. Our next course of action would be to close the parking lot altogether, and we do not want to have to do that. Moving forward, parents will be issued conduct letters for inappropriate and unsafe behavior. We thank you for your partnership.

Our very own Mrs. Keldin had the honor of accepting the Mayor’s Award for Arts & Culture in Innovation on behalf of her dance company’s creator, Edgar L. Page. You can also se Mrs Keldin featured in this video about Edgar. Congratulations!

A huge thank you to Skeeter Buck for donating funds from her book sales of the “Toothless Fairy” back to Cory.  We always appreciate the support of our community.

The School Choice enrollment application window for the 2023-24 school year begins 10 a.m. Jan. 13, 2023 and ends 4 p.m. Feb. 14, 2023.  At Denver Public Schools, we believe all families should have equitable access to the schools they think are best for their kids. Any student who wants or needs to attend a new school for 2023-24 can take part in SchoolChoice. This includes students transitioning to kindergarten, sixth and ninth grade. (All incoming preschool students must participate.) SchoolChoice is as easy as Find, Apply, Register!

● Find: First, to prepare for SchoolChoice, learn more about schools in which you might be interested, starting with your neighborhood school. Check out the School Finder, read the Great Schools Enrollment Guides, and contact individual schools.
● Apply: Create your account. (We recommend using your Parent Portal account username and password to log in). Then, fill out and submit the SchoolChoice application – including ranking your most-preferred schools (up to 12) – any time during the month-long Choice window, 10 a.m. Jan. 13 to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, 2023.
● Register: Once placement notifications are sent in late March, connect with your school for registration information. Need assistance?

A message from the Library:
Hey Caregivers,

We are helping students read anytime!

Denver Public Schools is committed to bringing unique learning opportunities to our students and we are pleased to introduce a new, free reading service providing digital books through Sora, the student reading app.

Why Sora?

The collection of titles in Sora is an extension of Denver Public School’s physical library, only it’s in an app with 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks. It’s convenient for students to check out titles at home, on the weekends or during school breaks with no worry about misplacing a book or wondering when it’s due – these digital titles automatically return at the end of the lending period!

Sora can help students of all ages read more and improve comprehension.  Struggling or reluctant readers, learning-challenged, second language learners, and gifted readers can all benefit from this service.

  • Enrich vocabulary and improve comprehension and pronunciation
  • Introduce students to books above their reading level
  • Teach critical listening
  • Help busy kids find time to read
  • Incentivize reading with fun avatars and achievements
  • Allow easy access to Denver Public Library’s collection, too! (in the Sora menu select: +Add a public library)

How does it work?

Download the free Sora app from the Apple App store, Google Play Store or visit soraapp.com, borrow with your standard DPS login, and enjoy anytime, anywhere on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Whether a student’s interest lies in classics for required reading, or the latest popular juvenile or young adult fiction, they can find it all in Sora!

Where can I find more information?

Feel free to email me with any questions at: matthew_davis7@dpsk12.net or check out our Library Website.

Sincerely,

Matt Davis (Mr. D.)
Cory Librarian/STEAM Teacher

  • First, TO is in search of applicants for our FREE braces program, TO Smiles. For the past 13 years, we have given away ten sets of free braces annually to children who could otherwise not afford them. Dr. Theroux even received the “Channel 7 Everyday Hero” award for this program. The best part of the program is that the recipients perform a 40 hour community service project to “Pay if Forward” and create a ripple effect of goodwill in the community. Please spread the word to teachers, counselors, and anybody who works with kids. We are an official Health Partner of Denver Public Schools.  The annual family income thresholds are quite generous and in general if a child qualifies for free or reduced lunch then they will likely meet the criteria to apply. HISTORICALLY, JUST OVER 50% OF THOSE WHO APPLY ARE ACCEPTED! Those are great odds, so spread the word! All the information is on our website, https://total-orthodontics.com/tosmiles. Thank you in advance!

Note: All Enrichment classes are over the the year. Please make sure to pick up your children next week!

COVID Reporting Update:
Anyone can report Covid positive students or staff members. Please be sure to report all cases. Please use this COVID Report Form

How Sick is Too Sick?
When Children and Staff Should Stay Home from School or Child Care
Evaluation of a sick child must consider which diseases are currently circulating  among students, staff, and the community. Known exposure to cases or an outbreak  of a contagious disease (including but not limited to those listed here), even without  a confirmed diagnosis, may necessitate more stringent return to school  requirements.  During Colorado’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, children and staff  who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should receive testing, and follow the  COVID-19 isolation guidance until testing is completed or if they test positive. If the  individual tests negative for COVID-19, the individual should then follow the  recommendations for their disease or symptoms using the below guidance.  There are four main reasons to keep children and adults at home: 1. The child or staff is at risk of infecting others with COVID-19 or another contagious illness, either because of symptoms or recent close contact. 2. The child or staff member does not feel well enough to take part in usual
activities. For example, a child is overly tired, fussy or will not stop crying.  3. A child needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.  4. The child or staff member has symptoms or an illness is on this list, and staying home is required.

Friends of Cory Campaign: 30 Days to Go

Thank you to all the families that have contributed to the Friends of Cory over the past few months. We’ve raised just under $50,000 towards our $55,000 goal, and are very appreciative of your support. If you haven’t donated yet and would like to help us, there are 22 days left in the campaign! You can make your gift here:  https://fnd.us/424yb9?ref=sh_f8PUZ1

The FOC campaign team will reach out in early 2023 to distribute yard signs, car stickers, and kids’ bracelets. THANK YOU for your parental partnership in helping the PTA bridge the gap between what DPS provides to Cory and what it takes to offer a top-ranked education to our children.

The funds raised will be distributed between Cory’s 30 office staff, specials teachers, paraprofessionals, custodial and lunchroom staff, and other support staff.

**Please note that contributions are for staff only––they will not be distributed to homeroom teachers because they receive many class and student gifts during the holidays.

To contribute electronically, please Venmo @CoryElementary, or there is an envelope in the main office to drop off cash or check donations (please make checks out the Cory PTA). Please make contributions by Thursday, December 9.
