Message from the Principal

Cory Families,

We look forward to our STEAMM night and hope everyone can attend! Please come in and support our book fair next week as we appreciate our PTA in providing this opportunity for our students.

Each month Cory will focus on four words as a whole school. Our hope is you will partner with us and attempt to use these words in your life outside of school. Students will be able to share when they heard or used the words each month by writing about it and placing it in the bucket outside room 204.

November’s vocabulary words are: cornucopia, eleemosynary, crepuscular, sublime

I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend.

Welcome our new Special Education Teacher, Nichol Somers!

My name is Nichol Somers and I am so excited to be part of this community as one of your special education teachers! I have had the privilege of working with families and students with diverse needs for 16 years and it is truly my passion. As a classic midwest gal, I began my life’s work in Chicago Public Schools in 2009 and taught there for 12 years supporting students across all grades and settings in understanding HOW they learn and HOW to advocate for their needs in the educational setting.  I am a fierce advocate for inclusion and providing equitable opportunities for all learners through accommodations, modifications and specialized instruction. I recently watched some of my first students from 2010 graduate high school and attend college this year and that feeling is something I hold so close to my heart. ♥️

In addition to special education I am also a registered yoga teacher and have discovered an uncharted space where mindfulness and yoga fuse with special education and I have begun my masters work in researching the benefits of mindfulness and mindful movement with students (and adults!) who navigate disabilities in the public education world. I strongly believe that everybody should know and understand the tool they possess, that is their breath.

In 2021, my partner and I made the decision to head to the mountains for a new adventure and recently bought our first house and are calling Wheat Ridge home! In my spare time you can find me attempting 180’s on my snowboard, reading in my favorite yellow reading chair, throwing flour around the kitchen while baking cupcakes and pies and dancing to my favorite records. I can not wait to get to know the staff, the students and their families at Cory!

With so much gratitude, Ms. Somers

Message from the District:

Prioritizing Attendance Around the Upcoming Holiday Breaks

As we transition into the holiday season, we want to take a moment to remind you of the importance of consistent school attendance. Regular attendance not only builds students’ ability to follow daily routines but also is important to their personal, social, academic and emotional development.

With the upcoming holiday breaks, we encourage you to plan family activities around our school calendar to ensure your child is present in school all day, every day. Each day of instruction is vital in helping our students meet their educational goals and maintain their learning progress. Make-up work does not fully help students recover missed instruction, and one student’s absence affects classmates’ progress due to the collaborative nature of learning.

Access the 2024-25 school year calendar to plan appointments and travel around the following breaks:

  • November Break: Nov. 25-29
  • December Break: Dec. 23, 2024-Jan. 6, 2025

We appreciate your partnership in supporting your child’s education and look forward to seeing them at school each day!
