Principal Update

Thank you all for coming to our Thanksgiving Lunch today!  We are very appreciative of all of you and love having you in our school.  Unfortunately we ran out of some of the food for the afternoon lunches and we are figuring out why this happened.  We deeply apologize and our kitchen manager, Carmen, feels horrible that this occurred.

Report Cards are now available on Parent Portal.  Please let your child’s teacher know if you cannot see it.  If you have any trouble logging in to Parent Portal, please go to the DPS Parent Portal website for assistance.

We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable  Thanksgiving Break!

Collaborative School Committee December Meeting – Please Join Us!

Thank you to all the parents, teachers and staff who participated in the Fall Forum in November! Your ideas and suggestions were greatly appreciated and will help inform our work going forward. We will be discussing these ideas during our next CSC meeting, scheduled for Thursday, December 3 from 4-6 pm in the Cory Library. Our agenda will also include a presentation of the Teacher Leadership and Collaboration program that Cory will begin implementing next school year, a preview of our school budgeting process that will happen in January, and other exciting topics!  We hope you can join us!

Penny Harvest

Dear Cory Community,

After more than 15 years without Student Council representing Cory’s student body, Cory Student Council is back! This is Student Council’s 2nd year. This year Student Council’s one and only fund raising is “Penny Harvest”. Penny Harvest is an organization that supports the Young Philanthropists Foundation. We are raising money for the next few weeks in the form of coins. This money will go towards supporting organizations/foundations that Cory students would like to support. With the money that you donate you help Cory kids change our community little by little. Cory can make a difference and we would like to make a big one. Please give all the change you can to your child to bring into their classroom! Harvesting of pennies ends on December 4th.

Sincerely: The Council, Mrs. Stricker and Mrs. Fine

Cory Book Fair Ends Today

Thank you for attending the book fair, getting more books in the hands of our children, filling teacher wish lists and donating books to the Cory classrooms. The book fair ends at 6 pm today, Thursday, but online shopping is available until 11/29 and still supports the school (scholastic.com/fair). Books ordered online will arrive at the school the first week in December.

Music News

A couple of announcements:

1) The Winter Program for 2nd/3rd/4th grade students will take place Thursday, December 17th at 6pm at Merrill Middle School.  Students should report no later than 5:40pm. Students should CLICK HERE for the online resources to practice at home.

2) *NEW TO CORY* Ms. Polete is thrilled to be starting The Cory Chorale for all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who love to sing! Registration will take place through the Cory/C3 Enrichment Program. Choir will begin Thursday, January 7th and run through May (this is longer than most enrichment classes. Please ensure your student can participate the entire time). Rehearsals will be on Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00pm in the Cory auditorium. For more information, including a link to register, please CLICK HERE.

Accompanist needs: I would love to have a parent accompanist for the Cory Chorale. I have accompanist contacts outside of the Cory community who I will reach out to if necessary, but I would love to find a willing and able accompanist from within the Cory community, if possible! Please contact me at amy_polete@dpsk12.org!  I’d be happy to share with you more about the time commitment and my vision for the choir.

3) Calling all 5th grade students who love to sing! Denver Public Schools has a great tradition of hosting city-wide events to showcase student talent throughout the district. This year, 5th grade students from Cory will have the opportunity to audition for and participate in the city-wide elementary choir taking place on February 11th, 2016.   Auditions for students interested in participating will take place Thursday, December 3rd from 3:30-4:00pm in the Music Room. For more specific information regarding City-Wide choir, please CLICK HERE.

Grounds Clean-up Day

We would like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy Sunday to give our grounds some much needed TLC, especially Sam Sturhahn and Kendra Maruyama for leading the event! It was a beautiful day and a lot of hard work and fun was had by all! The school looks fantastic and we thank you again for your help!

Yearbook Cover Contest

To the 5th grade students: Yearbook cover color contest forms went home last week. You are invited to submit your drawings for the cover this year. This year’s school theme is “Out of This World”. Feel free to incorporate it into your drawings if you’d like. Entries are due no later than Monday November 30th. All 5th graders will have the opportunity to vote the next day and the winner will be announced December 2nd.

Missing Visitor Badges

Check your cars.  Check your kitchen counters.  Check the tops of your dressers.  If you accidentally took a Cory Visitor/Volunteer Badge home with you during the Thanksgiving Luncheon, can you please return it as soon as possible?  Thank you so much!

Teacher Spotlight

This week we chat with our newest Cory team member, Kate Hutson, who joins Jan Struharik as our ESL specialist, helping meet the needs of our English Language Learners.

Q1. What inspired you to become a teacher?

I have had many amazing teachers who have had a positive impact on my life. It is those individuals that inspired me to become an elementary teacher.

Q2. Is Cory what you thought it would be?

Cory is absolutely what I thought it would be!  From my first weeks, I am amazed at the level of collaboration, passion and dedication among the staff and community.  Naturally the students pick up on this and it helps to develop lifelong learners.

Q3. If you were stranded on a desert island, what food would you crave?

Oh man, this is always a tricky question to answer but chips and salsa would probably be high on the list! However, I do love my coffee with cream in the morning.
