Teacher Spotlight

This week we chatted with Katie McOwen – our new 4/5 math and science teacher.

Q. What inspired you to become a teacher?

While I loved the study of architecture, I felt unsatisfied in the practice of it, so I thought about what I enjoyed.  In my early adulthood I had spent time working with kids as a camp counselor, soccer coach, and swim instructor and I truly enjoyed each experience.  I personally love learning and then being able to share information with others as well as having fun while exploring new things is great.  I love seeing how children can take on a challenge and grow by practicing skills, and I also love the fact that no matter how crazy a day can get, kids can always make me smile and laugh.  Something in me decided to take a leap and turn toward teaching and I haven’t regretted it a day since.

Q.  What is the favorite part of your day at Cory?

I think my favorite part of the day is first thing in the morning when the students are coming in to the room.  We have conversations about life outside of academics, tell jokes to one another, and sometimes act a little silly.  I like that I am able to get to know the students on a different level rather than just what I see in class when we are doing math and science.

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what food would you crave?

Hmmm…  that is hard!  My favorite food is mashed potatoes, so definitely that, but I think I’d also crave something sweet, therefore, I’ll say mint chocolate chip ice cream.
