October is Disability Acceptance month. Based on that, this week’s letter is focused on awareness and resources for inclusion and integration. National Disability Awareness Month was established in 1988 by Congress and is an opportunity to “pay tribute to the accomplishments of the men and women with disabilities” (Library of Congress) while also serving as an opportunity for organizations to ensure they are meeting the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities.
October is also Dyslexia Awareness Month which was formally recognized by congress in 2015 through this Cassidy Mikulski Dyslexia Resolution 275 as a way to spotlight one of the most common language-based learning disabilities that impacts almost 20% of school-age children in the US. In 2019, the Board of Education passed a resolution in support of inclusive practices which states that the District commits to ensuring students with disabilities experience inclusive practices in their classrooms and school buildings. It also outlines a commitment to developing a strategic plan that will “improve academic and social emotional outcomes for students with disabilities, eliminate racial disparities, and develop the skills of all school-based and district staff.” At Asbury, we are proud of our work and focus on inclusion. Check out more information on Disability Awareness and Dyslexia Awareness.

This year we strive to support racial and ethnic equity in our diverse Cory Community by taking a critical look at equity in Cory’s systems, structures, programming, and opportunities for family involvement. This team will examine our current state and collaborate to support greater equity for all students and families in our Cory Community.
If you would like to be involved, please contact Amber Bourgeois, by next Friday, October 15 at amber_bourgeois@dpsk12.org. I will be reaching out about scheduling as soon as I hear back. I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you!
Calling all leaf-rakers, wheel-barrow-riders, and donut-eaters! Cory’s annual Grounds Clean Up Day is happening on Saturday, Oct. 30th from 9:30am – 12pm! We’ll be raking leaves, clipping branches, planting bulbs, and helping put the Cory Garden to bed for the year, all while enjoying refreshments (did we mention donuts!) and good company! Students, parents, siblings, alums,
grandparents, and any other Cory fans welcome! An assortment of adult-sized tools and leaf bags will be provided, but we could use a few folks with portable leaf-blowers and bulb donations. Families are also encouraged to bring along gloves, leaf grabbers, and any kid-sized gear for young helpers.
Mark your calendars, and please sign up at the link below to join us and bring some supplies.

Friends of Cory raises money to support full-time specials teachers. This year, our specials team is partnering with classroom teachers to integrate grade-level content with project-based learning. Our students will engage in two STEAM units connected to literacy and math topics, and they are planning for a musical performance linked to a grade-specific unit of study.
It’s going to be an exciting year! Your annual support of Friends of Cory makes it possible. Please make your gift online today. Cash or check donations can be dropped off at the Cory office.
