Students working on building a castle at recess and following all social distancing rules!
Mask break time!

We are ready to welcome back our students into the building next week.

At Cory, we have many students who experience tree nut and peanut allergies. Now that we are heading back in person and students will be eating lunch in the classroom, we are asking families to avoid sending lunch or snacks with nuts in them. We know this is not always possible, so if you are sending nuts please let the classroom teacher know.

Halloween is right around the corner. This is always a special time at Cory. Know that we are working to find a safe way to celebrate. More details to come.  We will have a spirit week on Oct. 26th.

Please make sure you are completing the health screen for your students before they come to school. We will also do a quick check, but appreciate you taking the time to fill out a brief health survey. Here is the Safe Access Link

YouTube Update:
As a staff, we have decided not to block YouTube as it is a resource for teachers.  We will partner with families to reinforce how to use technology appropriately.

A few reminders:
We have changed the pick-up location for 5th grade.  Please refer to the map below.  We will also not have an adult for morning Kiss and Go so please discuss with your child how to walk to their grade level door after being dropped off.  We will have an adult at Kiss and Go for dismissal.

    • 8:45am Students may arrive in 5 minute increments between 8:45am-9:00am.
      •  8:45am, students whose last names begin with A-I will drop off
      •  8:50am, students whose last names begin with J-Q will drop off.
      •  8:55am, students whose last names begin with R-Z drop off.
      • They will then go to their designated door and proceed directly to their classroom to meet their teacher and have a quick health check.
    • Children may not come to school prior to 8:45am and there will be no playing on the playground or on the blacktop.  1st and 2nd grade families can walk students onto the blacktop for arrival and dismissal. 3rd-5th grade families will not be allowed to drop off or pick-up on the blacktop.  Please find a location to meet your students on the field.
    • Breakfast will be provided as a grab and go.  You can find breakfast bags outside of the cafeteria door each day at 8:45am.
    • 8:45am: First Bell
    • 9:00am: Tardy Bell/Learning Begins—Students arriving after 9:00am check into the office before going to class.  No parents/guardians may enter the building.
    • 2:45pm: Instructional Day Ends—Students pack up to go home! We will do a gradual release of students following the same protocol for arrival. Please arrange a location to pick-up your child each day to build a routine because families cannot wait on the blacktop or playground to pick-up their student.
    • Children may not play on the playground or on the blacktop.
      • 2:45pm, students whose last names begin with A-I will pick-up
      • 2:50pm, students whose last names begin with J-Q will pick-up.
      • 2:55pm, students whose last names begin with R-Z pick-up.
    • Kiss and Go- Families will receive their numbers for Kiss and Go next week.  C3 also has Kiss and Go that lasts until 2:45pm.  We are asking Cory families not to arrive before 2:45pm for Kiss and Go.  Kiss and Go will also follow the soft closure times so please be mindful about what time your child will be at Kiss and Go.
    • No picking up or dropping students off on Steele and Florida.
  • Please keep technology charged and bring to school each day to school
  • Lunch will be provided each day from the Cory Cafeteria.
  • There was a staffing change for quarter 2.  Mrs. Alexandar will be supporting Dr. Laughlin’s 5th grade literacy class in person.
  • Please remember to send your child with everything they need each morning.  We want to limit exposure and transition of the COVID virus.
  • We are asking families to not send their child to school with gator face coverings.  Please send your child with a mask each and every day to school.
  • Updated Family Handbook

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns or suggestions.

  • 10/16-10/20 – NO SCHOOL – FALL BREAK

Our annual giving campaign, Friends of Cory, is going on now! One of the many programs that Friends of Cory supports is our library and technology program.  Wasn’t it wonderful to read “The Wish Tree” as one school the last few weeks?  One Book, One School is creating a sense of community and connection, and helping students find common ground at a time when we all need it most!

Did you know that Friends of Cory funds full-time technology and library resources in addition to much of the technology itself?  2020 has been quite a year of challenge and growth and we appreciate Dawn Miller and all the Specials Teachers and Paras for becoming a dynamic resource to our school.  Their adaptability to support different subjects, grades, small groups, and staffing gaps is critical this year, and would not have been possible without your generous support to Friends of Cory.

Please make a gift to support Friends of Cory by clicking here today!

As many of our students are returning to our building, now is a great time to turn in any library books that have been living in your homes!  Please search high and low for missing library books and bring them in to your classroom teacher.  Teachers will get them back to the library.  I am happy to announce that students are able to check out library books this school year!  It will definitely look a little different since the library cannot be open to groups of students.  However, students are welcome to place a hold will searching for books in our online catalog, Destiny Discover.  I will fill their holds, and then deliver the books to their classrooms.  Here are simple directions:
Please feel free to begin using our hold process!  Our library books have been very lonely!

When we return to in-person learning, it is important to know that the Cory nurse will only be at Cory on Mondays, Wednesday, and Thursdays.  If you have medications that need to be dropped off, they need to be brought on one those days as they need to be given to the nurse only.

If a student needs to take medications at school, the following requirements must be met:

  1. The medication must be a prescription.
  2. The medication must be in the original container.
  3. The medication must be readable, including a clear identification of the name and type of medication.
  4. Medication must have a prescription label with the child’s name, drug identification, dosage instructions, doctor’s name and current prescription date.
  5. A “Permission to Take Medication” form must be signed by the parent/guardian for all medications, including Tylenol. (listed below must be on a DPS med form)
  6. The nurse, health paraprofessional or office staff will administer medications.

NOTE:  Due to liability factors, over-the-counter medications, including but not limited to cough medicine, cough drops, Tylenol, ibuprofen, and stomach medication cannot be administered at school.

Medication forms are listed below

Thank you all for your support at Bull and Bush – What a turn out! We raised nearly $1100!
Thank you for your takeout orders and stopping in for dining out!
Our next event is going to be at Ester’s Neighborhood Pub on Monday Oct., 26th!  Located at 1950 South Holly St., it has a wide variety of delicious home-cooked items.

Ester’s is graciously donating 10% of all sales all day long 11-close to our Cory PTA!   With plenty of outside dining, there is plenty of elbow room to accommodate our social distancing needs! Dine in, or take out some delicious treats! Take some time off from cooking and enjoy lunch and/or dinner out. Hope to see you then!
