Parent Post – 11/8/19

Posted November 8, 2019

Hello Cory Families,

Happy November! In this month of giving thanks, we as a staff want to express our deepest thanks to our families and community for supporting Cory. We appreciate the endless hours of volunteering, doing homework with your kids, reading together, and attending school events. Together we make Cory as wonderful as it is so thank you!

Last month, we celebrated the personal success factor of curiosity as a school. We value all of our students and appreciate everyone being positive role models of personal success factors. We appreciate students being excited to share how curiosity can impact their future. This month students will be learning about gratitude and how to show gratitude.

We look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday, November 20th for a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch served by our fantastic cafeteria staff.  Please be aware that we may run late because it is hard to serve high numbers of people in our small cafeteria kitchen. We appreciate your patience. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, November 15th. You will not be able to buy lunch that day because we use the number of tickets purchased to plan for that amount of food. You are welcome to bring lunch.

Next week, our staff will dive into the Learning Pit professional development. We are excited to learn and explore new ways to challenge our students. The Learning Challenge is for the teachers, leaders and staff who wish to guide students in the development of critical, creative, caring and collaborative thinking. It is a model that provides learners with a language to think and talk about learning. It helps build participants’ resilience, wisdom and self-efficacy. And when it is used as a structure for learning, it can also improve teacher clarity and raise expectations of success. We are excited to engage in this work.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Principal

ANNUAL CORY BOOK DRIVE

Are there books gathering dust on your child’s bookcase? Would you like to make room for the new books that your child will want to buy at the book fair? Well, you’re in luck. Third-grade students will be collecting gently used books to give to students at a nearby DPS elementary school. Book drive boxes will be located throughout the school from November 14th through the 21st, so start collecting those books. We can’t wait to see what a difference we can make when we all work together to give back to our Denver community.

Grounds Clean Up Day

THIS Sunday is Grounds Clean Up Day, from 9am – 12pm! We’ll be raking leaves, spreading mulch, among other fun gardening activities, all while enjoying refreshments (of course, lots of donuts!) and good company. New this year: Rewards For Raking! Discounts and prizes from local businesses to say thank you for your efforts! Students, parents, siblings, alums, grandparents, and any other Cory fans welcome. Adult-sized tools and leaf bags will be provided, but we could use a few portable leaf-blowers, trimmers, leaf paws, among other items. Sign up here if you plan to bring any of these items (of course fine to just bring them too!): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4AAAAF2AA5FB6-cory2.  Please contact Margit Archer (marcher006@gmail.com) or Kristin Axley (kristinaxley@gmail.com) with any questions.

Fall Into Reading” at Cory Literacy Night

Students and families are invited to attend Cory’s first-ever literacy night! Come dressed as your favorite book character (optional) and enjoy a variety of activities that celebrate a love of reading and writing. Please plan to come with your child and enjoy the events in the link here.

Extra, Extra! Read (and Write) All About It

Volume 4 of The Cory Times is in the works and we know your children would love to have their voices heard! We are in search of articles on community issues or events, school happenings, comics, poetry and artwork from students in all grades.

We are set to send the paper to the publisher December 6 and will be accepting article submissions anytime between November 4 – December 4.  Please email your child’s submission and/or any questions you might have to thecorytimes@gmail.com. Thank you for your support and encouragement of our young writers!

CORY “WORKS OUT” TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL!

We had an awesome first Cory “Works Out” this past Tuesday! We filled all our spots and raised $240 for our great community. Our next workout at Shred 415 could raise $600 if we can fill all the spots! Please see the link below for December and January workouts and sign up!
*There is 8 childcare spots with Shred 415. Please indicate if you need childcare when signing up. These will be on a first come first serve basis.

If you missed any prior communication on our work outs this is what we are doing.

Cory is partnering with gyms across Denver to raise money and bring Cory families a special workout each month. Come join the community, get your sweat on, and raise money for our school at the same time.

Each workout class held will be 30-60 minutes, $20/per person, and 90-100% of funds raised will go directly to Cory. Day of the week and time of day will vary by gym. Space is limited based on capacity per location. First-come, first-served basis.
