Parent Post – 11/01/19

Dear Cory Families,

Happy Friday! This week was very busy and filled with crazy schedules that we continually had to adapt due to weather. I enjoyed seeing all the students in their costumes and families joining the parade. I was thrilled to be a part of the fun and dress up to join the parade. Thank you to all the families who supported classroom teachers with the parade. It was a great community event!  We appreciate seeing joy and fun in the classrooms so thank you for partnering with us!

Professional Development Plan for Teachers

I wanted to share the professional development plan that teachers have been engaging in for the first part of the year.  We have been working on Culturally Relevant Teaching practices to support high expectations, ensuring tasks are reflecting the rigor of the standard, academic mindsets and creating tasks that reflect the level of rigor in literacy and math.  We will begin to explore The Learning Challenge to support instructional moves that increases the level of productive struggle. We want to provide students with the tools to tackle a concept or skill that requires dedicated mental and physical response that elicits thoughts such as ‘This is hard’ or ‘I can’t do this’ and then using all the skills discussed previously will result in deep learning. (Even although it feels demanding and stressful!)

Students are also engaging in reflecting and debriefing at the end of lessons, as well as one on one conferences with students who need encouragement and support. Many of our students have set goals for themselves. We would love your support in helping your child achieve his/her goals. Two questions you might ask your child are, “What support do you need from me to achieve your goal?” Or, “How might I support your effort to achieve this goal?”

As always, we are so grateful for your support and partnership.

In the meantime, please contact Margit Archer (marcher006@gmail.com) or Kristin Axley (kristinaxley@gmail.com) with any questions.

EXTRA, EXTRA!!!  READ (AND WRITE) ALL ABOUT IT!

Volume 4 of The Cory Times is in the works and we know your children would love to have their voices heard! We are in search of articles on community issues or events, school happenings, comics, poetry and artwork from students in all grades.

We are set to send the paper to the publisher December 6 and will be accepting article submissions anytime between November 4 – December 4.  Please email your child’s submission and/or any questions you might have to thecorytimes@gmail.com. Thank you for your support and encouragement of our young writers!
