Library/Technology Classes at Cory
Information literacy and critical thinking are more important than ever in today’s world. Our library and technology program at Cory is centered on the Colorado Department of Education’s (CDE) 21st Century Skills:
In order to reach every student at Cory, each class visits the library weekly for 50 minutes split into 20 minutes for Library and 30 minutes for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math or S.T.E.A.M.
During library sessions all students enjoy a group read aloud. Titles include the Colorado Children’s Book Award nominees that the students later vote on in early spring as well as curated titles on various topics. The library has over 7,000 books and read aloud is followed by book checkout and screenless, community centered passive programming stations for students. First and second grade students may check out two books at a time and third through 5th grade may check out three books at a time. Throughout the year, mini lessons are presented on topics like library organization, genre, digital searches and books, banned books, and more.
In S.T.E.A.M. students learn about science and technology through project based and hands-on lessons. All lessons are based on the CDE’s science and computer science standards. Additional material is provided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards.
Lessons are on a wide variety of science and technology topics including digital citizenship, coding, artificial intelligence (AI), media creation, climate, forces in motion, properties of materials and more. Lessons are based on standards specific to grade level and have a mix of onscreen and real life project creation evaluated by rubrics. You can see all the topics for each grade at the K-5 Lessons STEAM Page
You can always learn more about the library and S.T.E.A.M. classes, current events, and on the Cory Library and Technology Website.
