PARENT POST – MARCH 2, 2018
Dear Cory Community,
It has been another busy week at school! Several teams worked together, on site, to continue “backwards planning” our thematic units. Together, we mapped our learning experiences to big ideas/essential questions and looked for opportunities to build authentic inquiry into our units. This week our 5th grade students hosted their first annual “wax museum” for the community. The museum was based on a unit students explored focused on three essential questions: What is the role of sports in American culture? How have athletes broken barriers during the historical era in which they lived? And What do biographical informational texts teach us? Students uncovered inspirational and courageous stories of individuals who broke gender, racial and other barriers to become incredibly successful professional athletes paving the way for others. Students uncovered the inspiring stories of Billie Jean King, Louis Zamperini, Serena and Venus Williams, Jackie Robinson and many, many more. It was exciting to hear our younger students, after visiting the museum, asking their teachers if they would have an opportunity to be part of the wax museum in 5thgrade!
Another great 5th grade project students recently completed is the Early Colony Radio Shows. The 5th graders worked in library/technology class to create original radio shows based on life in the early colonies of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Each class studied the three colonies with their teacher as part of their social studies curriculum. During library, they worked in small groups and were tasked with researching their assigned colony, and creating a script for a radio show based on their research. We used the web tool “Audacity” to record each show. We hope you enjoy listening to them. You can find them on the library/technology wiki at: http://corylibrary.wikispaces.com/5th+Grade+Early+Colonies+Radio+Shows.
If you have a moment take a listen, they are just great!
Finally, we are excited to be hosting a joint welcome for our new principal, from the PTA and the CSC, on March 23rd on the blacktop from 8:30-8:45 and then in the cafeteria, after drop off, from 8:45-9:15. This will be an informal opportunity to meet Joan Weiser and enjoy coffee with our community. Please mark your calendars. We hope to see you all there!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Liz

The Cory Times
Harvard University announces full scholarship opportunities for Cory Elementary Students! Ok, so that was fake news, but hope I got your attention. Let’s talk about real news in our community. We need your children’s help. We are hard at work on the third edition of the Cory Times and with only three more weeks to go, we are short on content. Again, please submit the articles along with any questions to thecorytimes@gmail.com, byMarch 19!
Getting better at writing and having your kid published in a newspaper may just help them get that scholarship after all!

Yearbook Photos
I am looking for photos of the kids and Ms. Lewis from the night of the Winter Concert; group shots of the kids singing, Ms. Lewis directing, groups of kids posing work great! Some of these will be in this year’s yearbook. Please send anything you might like to contribute, as high of a resolution as possible, to me at slexstrom@comcast.net.
Order Your Cory Yearbook Today!
The yearbook will be going to press this month. Be sure to pre-order your copy today. If you cannot find the form that went home with your child in their Friday folder, extra forms can be found in the office.
Philanthropic Service Club
“Founded and run by a small group of Cory kids, the Philanthropic Service Club is having its second annual service day event Sunday, March 18 from 2-4pm. Over the last year, the club members have been hard at work researching, touring and presenting information they’ve gathered on non-profit charitable organizations both local and around the globe. Last month, the group voted to have their service event benefit Sewall Child Development Center, a Denver based organization serves children with special needs due to disabilities, economic disadvantage and developmental delays.
Calling all 1st Graders!
Please help us stock the Teachers Lounge, this Tuesday, March 6th. Please bring healthful snacks, sparkling waters, Vitamin Waters, or anything you think our Teachers and Staff will enjoy!
