Hello Cory Families,
It was great to see so many of you last night at back to school night! Thank you so much for your support of our school. At the opening session in the auditorium we had an opportunity for parents to fill out a small paper asking parents “What makes Cory special to you?” It has been wonderful learning about the Cory community and the things that you identify as helping to define Cory’s uniqueness. Many of you expressed similar and inspiring sentiments around the quality of our teachers, the sense of community and the caring, nurturing environment of the school. We will be posting these comments on the bulletin board outside of the office to celebrate what makes our school special in the eyes of our families. Please take a moment to stop by and read these, they are very moving.In other school news, please remember that there is no school Monday as we celebrate Labor Day. And finally, as you know Hurricane Harvey has been one of the worst storms in recent history. The storm has wreaked havoc on many communities. We will be placing a large box for donations to the Houston Schools outside the main office. If you would like to participate in the drive, please see the below on what the school district is looking for. No donation is too small.Help Houston: Donate Children’s Clothing and School Supplies
Nearly 50 of Houston Independent School District’s (HISD’s) schools have been flooded, and many families are taking shelter in schools with less damage. Children do not have extra clothes or school supplies and need our help. HISD has an immediate, urgent need for children’s clothes and school uniforms of all sizes that are clean and in reasonably good condition. It also has a need for school supplies.

Picture Day 

Picture day is quickly approaching. Pre-orders for picture packages may now be placed online at https://ios.mydorian.com using your school’s access key provided here GZQBEQ3P. Online pre-orders using your school’s access key are available up to 4 days after picture day.

Pick-Up List

We are still missing several Student Pick-up lists for the 2017-2018 school year.  If you have not already returned yours, please do so as soon as possible.  It is so important for us to have this information in the office.  Thank you!  Access the Pick-Up List form.

 

Donate Portable A/C Unit

We are looking for a portable a/c unit for Ms. Alexander’s art classroom.  If anyone or any family would like to donate a unit or let us borrow a unit to get her class through the next month, the kids would greatly appreciate it!  Her room has been very hot and a lot of her art supplies are heat sensitive.  Thank you!

ACCESS testing scores this year. Please bring a favorite snack from your culture to

DPS is proud to bring Destination Imagination to Cory! 

Destination Imagination is preparing Colorado’s kids to be the innovators of the future by combining the arts, sciences, and technology with creativity, teamwork, and problem solving.
In order to be successful and offer this opportunity to our students, we also need adult volunteers as well. If your student is interested in competing this year, please consider co-managing a team!

Cory Garden

Hello, Cory Families!

We wanted to welcome our new families (and old) to the Cory Garden and introduce you to this year’s programs.

Our vision for the Cory Garden is to collaborate with students and teachers to use our beautiful garden as an extended outdoor classroom to support experiential learning opportunities for our children.

Our garden, from the planting of the first seed in the spring, to putting the garden to bed in November is a labor of love and collaboration between, students, teachers, and parents.

In the spring, every classroom participated in planting seedlings, hauling new garden dirt, pulling weeds, building garden boxes and spreading mulch.

And now it is time to harvest.  Our garden supports two key programs for the students:

1.    Garden to Cafeteria – Each Monday, our students harvest produce from our raised garden beds and sell it to the school cafeteria to be used on the salad bar or in food made from scratch. The vegetables from our garden are grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Our school garden provides more than 100 pounds of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, radishes, strawberries, onions, zucchini and carrots to the cafeteria each fall.

2.    Youth Farmer’s Market – Each Friday in the fall (beginning September 8), our students partner with Slow Food Denver to provide fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs (most harvested from our garden) to sell at the student run market on the school grounds. This event is widely attended not only by parents but by our community neighbors.  The Youth Farmer’s Market closes in late October with a huge pumpkin and caramel apple sale that sells out every year.

We invite you to come visit us on Friday’s at 3:30pm on the playground and support our school based garden program.  The Youth Farmers Market accepts cash, credit cards and we even provide IOU’s.
