Dear Cory Community,
When students feel safe and welcomed into their classrooms, they have the confidence to take academic risks! We have set a strong foundation, built on Transformative Social Emotional Academic Learning (TSEAL). Students and staff spent the first few weeks of school building a positive class and school culture. You can check out the lessons here: Unit 1: Positive School & Class Culture Students are now engaging in Unit 2: Self-Awareness. In this unit, our Cougars will begin to understand the connection between their emotions and physical feelings in their body. Students will understand that their actions have consequences. Students will also be introduced to Mindful Monday and RJ Friday! As we work to build a belonging culture, please be sure your student arrives on time. We have seen an uptick in tardies and this directly impacts students social emotional and academic learning. Starting the day as a class community sets students up for success!

A couple of reminders:
On Thursday, September 28th, you all are invited to learn more about some of the special programs we offer here at Cory. Presentations will last from 4:30PM-5:45PM. You do not have to come or stay the entire time. It will be adult focused, but if you can’t find child care you may bring your children to read, color, write, or use technology quietly during presentations. Programming information will be provided about Gifted and Talented, Reading and Math Intervention, Multilingual Learners, and Students With a Disability.
The purpose of this night is to give you general information about each of these programs and how students are given access to them. It is a night for families of children who are in the programs and for families interested in learning more. To keep the night running efficiently, we ask that student specific conversations happen during conferences in early October not on this night. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 28th.
Finally, our school psychologist and Chromebooks will be available for families to complete a Social Emotional Screener about their child called the BESS. The Denver Public Library will also be present to help sign you up for a library card and give you information about their fall programming.
Updates:
Greetings from the art studio—an open space where we value artistic autonomy. This fall we’ll be participating in the Original Works program to fundraise for new art materials.
Students are currently working on their W.O.W. (Wonderful Original Work of Art) projects which will later be scanned and available online to order in many forms. You can choose between products like magnets, mugs, or a framed print of your child’s art. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Cory art studio. We’ll send ordering information to you later in October!
In a few weeks we’ll begin a collage unit where students will learn about composition and have the option to make activist art. We need your help! Please send any magazines you have at home to school. Magazines with pictures are the best. We love sharing culture, and hope you might have magazines that represent your interests and communities.

Make sure you have turned in your child’s immunization record or exempt forms to the nurse. Letters for missing immunization or exemption forms will go out next week.
Just some healthy reminders please make sure your child has a water bottle at school, hydration is key to a healthy body and brain.
As a reminder we are an allergy aware school, Allergy Aware is a term used where it means to be informed about allergies, the impact the allergy has on an allergic person’s life/lifestyle and those close to them, familiarity with the severity of the symptoms and the treatments required in the case an allergic reaction. This means wiping areas after eating snacks or lunch, washing your hands, and being understanding that some of our peers have allergies to many different things. We do not share private health information about any student but ensure we are making a community who is aware that there are people who do have allergies and how we can support them and keep them healthy and safe.
For students who need meal modifications for school meals please have the attached form completed by your child’s health care provider and returned to the health office.

| Healthy School Meals for All: Complete the You Benefit! Form at Registration |
 All students in DPS will have access to free healthy, nutritious school meals beginning in the 2023-24 school year thanks to the Healthy School Meals for All program approved by Colorado voters! While meals will be provided for free to all DPS students through Healthy School Meals for All, families will still need to complete a form to ensure DPS gets full access to available federal funding. What this means for families:Please continue to fill out the You Benefit! form (formerly referred to as the Meals Application). We ask all DPS families to please complete the You Benefit! form during registration for the 2023-24 school year. By completing the form, you will help us access all available funds to cover the cost of meals, and other nutritional programs for students.Families who fill out the You Benefit! form may qualify to receive discounted school fees, class materials, bus passes, utilities support and more!All household income information provided through this form is strictly confidential and protected by law. Only one form is required for all children in the household. Immigration, migrant, citizenship or refugee status is not required when completing the form. PTA Updates
FALL CARNIVAL ADMISSION: Join us for the Cory Carnival on Sunday, October 1 from 11am-2pm on the blacktop! There will be games, prizes, inflatables, face painting, hair sparkles, the always-popular musical cakes, In-N-Out, Sweet Cow, and more! Carnival wristbands are $15 and include access to games, prizes, inflatables, face painting, musical cakes, and more! In-N-Out meal tickets must be pre-purchased for $10 and include your choice of a hamburger, cheeseburger or grilled cheese with chips and a drink. Buy wristbands and meal tickets here.
Walk to School Day: Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 4, and Cory will be celebrating in the morning with music and fun. More details will be shared next week, but please save the date.
Volunteer Services coordinates parent and community resources through volunteer onboarding, training, consulting, and matching of in-kind donations to schools, all of which support students, staff, and families of DPS.
