Dear Cory Community,
We know that cancelling classes this Friday was a hardship for many families. It is important to understand that Colorado has several challenges facing how schools are funded and how teacher pay impacts our profession and ultimately the children in our schools. Today, educators from around our state are lobbying for change. Part of the Cory mission we developed this year states: We inspire students to be globally aware, inquisitive and compassionate individuals… through service learning and social action. The march today is an opportunity for our teachers to model for our students how to take action and work for change.
Although school was canceled, a group of Cory kids are set to take the stage today at the Shakespeare Festival, which will continue its annual celebration of Shakespeare in schools. The kids and Ms. Laventure have worked very hard to make this performance a fabulous one. Congratulations to all of the students participating today! And, a huge thank you to all of our parent chaperones!
The last few weeks our students have also been learning the Denver Safe from the Start Curriculum, a curriculum presented by the Denver Children’s Advocacy Center. This program returns to Cory this year to address several issues, in a developmentally appropriate way, across grade levels. The sessions are: General Safety, Gun and Fire Safety, the Always Ask First Rule, Phone and Internet Safety, Safe/Unwanted/Unsafe Touches, The Touching Rule, Safety Steps. The program is an excellent one that reinforcing messages of how to be safe at home, school and out in the community.
Lastly, we are gearing up for a very busy May! Please mark your calendars for the many upcoming events listed below.
Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing weekend with your families.
Best,
Liz TenCate
