Exciting News from the Library

On March 9th, the author Jessica Day George is visiting Cory’s 3rd – 5th graders for a presentation and book signing. She has written many great fantasy books, including the series “Tuesdays at the Castle”. Her new book in the series, Saturdays at Sea has just been released. All of her books are available for pre-order. Simply fill out the Order Form – Jessica Day George (it can also be found on the library wiki at http://corylibrary.wikispaces.com) and bring in cash or a check to the library. I have multiple copies of all of her books available. Jessica will sign books after her presentation on March 9th. Books can also be ordered online through the Tattered Cover – the link is on the form. Feel free to contact me with any questions: dawn_miller@dpsk12.org.

Cory Philanthropic Service Club – First Annual Service Day Event

Founded and run by a small group of Cory kids, the Cory Philanthropic Service Club is having it’s first annual service day event Sunday, March 19 from 2-4pm. Over the last year, Cory Phil members have been hard at work researching, touring and presenting information they’ve gathered on non-profit charitable organizations both local and around the globe. Last month, the group voted to have their service event benefit Sole Hope, an organization that makes shoes out of old denim for impoverished children in Uganda.

Ugandans are commonly afflicted by foot related infections, much attributable to the jigger bug. A minuscule insect that causes immense pain by burrowing deep into the foot, laying eggs then often leaving the host infected, jiggers are highly prevalent in this country. In rural areas children often go without shoes leaving them extraordinarily susceptible.

On our service day, we will have a local representative and elementary school teacher give a brief presentation of Sole Hope to be followed with directions on how to begin he shoe making process. The shoe kits that we make will be mailed to an Ugandan shoe maker who will sew the uppers and attach the soles. Guest are encouraged but not required to bring a check for $10 addressed to Sole Hope to cover cost for shipping ($2), pay the tailor ($3), shoemaker ($3), and for finishing supplies such as tires, thread, and glue ($2).

We would love to have the entire Cory community join but have to limit it to the first 25 3rd, 4th and 5th grade families who register online through signupgenius.

There will be a box for old denim near the office through March 17. Families are more than welcome to bring their own along with fabric scissors for cutting the day of the event. Please RSVP via signup genius http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4ba9ad22a4f49-cory. Feel free to reach out to me personally with any questions.

Thanks and hope to see you there!
