PARENT POST 9/26/19

September 26, 2019

REMINDER:  THERE IS NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, FRIDAY, 9/27

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We had a wonderful week of learning! I enjoyed seeing students eager to share their writing and discuss the process of revision.  Students were reflecting  and evaluating on math strategies to increase efficiency and conceptual understanding.  During reading, students were engaged in high level reading tasks that required them to discuss and defend their claim.  It is amazing to walk through classrooms and see student ownership and agency throughout the day! Please take a moment and celebrate your students accomplishments and hard work everyday.

Our math teachers had a wonderful opportunity to learn from each other this week.  Our math teams were engaged in a Lesson Study.  A lesson study entails for teams to plan a lesson and then teach it while the team observes and takes notes on students productive struggle, engagement, agency and level of rigor.  Through this process, our teams are building a toolbox of best practices to support student success.

Tomorrow there is no school, but teachers will be working hard designing the next unit and using student data to drive instructional decision making.  As a team, we are really dedicated to fulfill our mission and vision through planning for challenging and meaningful experiences.

Fifth grade students, Annie Scherzinger, Jade Hughes and Gabi Freeman represented Cory this summer at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival.  They were Artrepreneurs, which are student art buyers. They were able to commission a work of art for Cory and purchase it from a Janus Henderson Investors grant written by Mrs. Alexander. The art pieces, by artist Anthony Hansen, fit together as a triptych, and are made of reclaimed automotive sheet metals reconfigured to form abstract contemporary quilts. Great job representing Cory, Artrepreneurs! A huge thank you to Mrs. Alexander for supporting students art passion and making the art program at Cory amazing!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,

Company Match! Did you know 65% of companies will match a charitable contribution made by employees, which could double or triple your donation!  Please take a few minutes to contact your employer’s HR department to see if your company offers a match.  Fill out your company’s matching gift form and drop it off or mail it to us at: Friends of Cory Annual Giving Campaign | Cory Elementary School | 1550 S. Steele St. | Denver, CO 80210. Our Tax ID is 84-6048027.

Remember, without your Friends of Cory donations, we could no longer support:

  • Paraprofessional educators in each classroom-lowering the student-teacher ratio to make sure our kids receive the attention and differentiation they need to learn most effectively
  • Full-time Art, P.E. & Music Teachers-DPS funds part-time only
  • Enrichment experiences-field trips, school garden, chickens, learning nights and community events
  • Classroom technology upgrades and learning tools-to provide a modern classroom

SCREENAGERS THE MOVIE
The PTA and CSC are collaboratively hosting an evening for Cory parents to view the critically acclaimed documentary, Screenagers.  Wednesday, 10/2 at 6:30pm, in the Cory Auditorium.
This film dives deep into how technology impacts kid’s development and the challenges of parenting in a world of technology, social media, and the messy struggle that impacts family life.  The film offers solutions on how we can manage this reality.  (runtime about 67-minutes). We will be viewing in the auditorium. We are promoting this to parents and do not recommend this for children under the age of 10. However, parent discretion is advised.
