PARENT POST 9/21/18

September 21, 2018

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Cory Families,

As you know, we have had unseasonable hot weather and the building is hot.  We are all feeling the heat.  We are in contact with DPS Facilities and HVAC department to mitigate the heat.  These departments are looking at ventilation and exhaust fans to ensure systems are running effectively.  These departments have found several of these systems were not working and repaired them.

In 2016 a bond was passed to support a $252 million investment in maintaining facilities, including funding for critical maintenance items that are necessary for the safe operation of schools. Approximately half of DPS facilities were built before 1969; the oldest buildings are also the largest, encompassing about 2/3 of the district’s total square feet.

  • This also includes $70 million to provide cooling solutions for our 79 schools with partial or no air-conditions (includes classroom air-conditioning at the hottest 18 buildings).

Cory is currently number 20 of the hottest schools.  We will receive Classroom level cooling units with this bond money, but we are awaiting the timeline for installation. We appreciate everyones patience and support for our students, teachers and community.  Have a wonderful day!

Thanks,

Joan Wieser

Friends of Cory provides critical support to the school, including:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM DPS SAFETY/SECURITY

Families will now receive emergency texts from the district. The communications team will also send emergency robo-calls. Messages will be sent during crises such as lockdowns, evacuations and weather delays/closures. We are excited about this change because sending text messages will inform families of crises in a much shorter time frame than what it takes for a robo-call or robo-email to be delivered.

Parents and guardians, you have been automatically opted-in to receive emergency texts based on cell phone numbers provided during registration. Please check to make sure your information is up-to-date in Parent Portal. Messages will be sent in English and Spanish.

Learn more about lockdowns and lockouts here.

FOOD AND NUTRITION TASTING EVENT

Food and Nutrition Services is hosting “Tasting Events” at schools during September and October.  Cory has been selected to host a Tasting Event on September 24th during all lunch periods.  The tasting event is intended to educate the DPS community about the changes and improvements in food services and to encourage more students to eat school lunch.   Cory is one of (36) schools holding a tasting event to promote healthy, scratch cooked school lunches.  We hope you will come by the cafeteria to sample one of our delicious menu items.
