A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
At Cory, we are deeply committed to fostering the social emotional development of our students and ensuring a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. The childhood and pre-teen years can be a time where students can experience big emotions, shifts in the social dynamics of their peer group, and new challenges that can come with more responsibilities at home or in school. We believe in providing students with the tools to solve problems and handle conflict.
We are using a number of social emotional programs in order to help our students cope with feelings, solve problems, and treat others with kindness and respect. Each classroom is implementing the evidence-based social emotional learning program, Second Step, which is proven to increase school success, decrease problem behaviors, and promote social-emotional competence and self-regulation skills. These skills are directly taught, practiced, and reinforced with students across grade levels and settings (e.g., classroom, specials, lunch, recess). Additionally, all classrooms are implementing the Mindful Schools program, which is designed to cultivate emotion regulation, attentional control, and self-awareness. This is in addition to “Mindful Minutes” that are done as a whole class (and periodically whole-school) to help students calm their bodies and minds and get ready to learn. As a whole school, we also focus on Personal Success Factors, which are indicators of academic and career success that are tightly linked to a student’s personal skills and strengths. Finally, we will be implementing the Riding the Waves program to our 5thgrade students here at Cory. This is a suicide prevention program that focuses on strong social, coping, and emotional skills. It addresses emotional development, depression, and anxiety in a developmentally appropriate way. Additionally, students are taught how to seek help when needed, as well as acknowledge peers’ difficulties and offer help. More information about this program will be provided once implementation date(s) are selected. In the meantime, if you have specific questions about the Riding the Waves program, feel free to contact Larissa Ausdenmoore (school psychologist) at firstname.lastname@example.org.
For more information on the social emotional learning happening at Cory, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Ms. Wieser (principal), or Ms. Ausdenmoore (school psychologist).
