REMINDER: THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Cory Community,
Cory will be holding our first Culture Week! We are excited for students not only to share about their culture but learn about other cultures across the world. Bridges of Cultural Understanding, the Mizel Museum’s traveling exhibits and associated programming, teaches cross-cultural understanding through an interactive presentation of themes and rituals from around the world. Mobile cases hold a wide array of cultural objects that invite students to explore commonalities and differences among various traditions from May 6- May 10th. Each exhibit includes presentations by museum educators. Understanding more about the different stories and practices of people will help students understand that we are all part of the human family with the responsibility to practice the Golden Rule and repair the world, a concept in Jewish culture known as Tikkun Plam. We will kick off culture week at our First Friday on May 3rd. Look for information coming home from teachers.
Monday is a non-student contact day. During this day, the staff will be building class lists and planning with grade level teams. We have received parent input forms which will be used as class lists are built. Please trust your teachers to know your children in an educational setting as well as the social dynamics among students. There are many factors that go into this thoughtful process including the social/emotional and academic considerations for every child.
The staff has been working on our Cory calendar for the coming year. After much discussion, we have added two additional teacher planning days to the traditional DPS calendar to meet the needs of our staff and students. Our staff has expressed significant concern about the amount of time to plan and prepare for multiple subjects and/or grades in the time allocated on the district calendar. This change will have a positive impact on our students as well. As a staff we will have regular opportunities to dive into our student work and plan for differentiation, extension and additional support on an ongoing basis. Discovery Link will offer care on these two additional days (Sept. 27, Nov. 22). Please see the link to the calendar below. All other dates remain the same as the district calendar.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
SPRING 2018 COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION:
The Collaborative School Committee (CSC) is a DPS-mandated board consisting of the principal, elected parent representatives, teachers, support staff and community members. Throughout the year, the CSC provides guidance and recommendations to improve academic performance; as well as advice on achieving the goals of Cory’s strategic plans, budget and staffing priorities, increasing parent engagement, and enhancing school culture.
We are holding elections for the one open parent CSC position beginning in the 2019/2020 school year.
INSTRUCTIONS: Please review the nominees and select ONE candidate. One vote per family. Attached here is a ballot if you would like to print from home. Ballots will also go home in the Friday Flyer. Return this ballot by Friday May 3rd 2019 to the office or electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org.
NO SEMANTICS CLUB ON WEDNESDAY, 5/1:
Semantics Club will not be meeting next week on Wednesday morning before school. Please make arrangements for your child to come at the regular school day time or to go somewhere else. I will be out of the building and out of town, so there will not be anyone here to supervise your children. Thank you!
ELEMENTARY SPRING ART SHOW
