PARENT POST – 3/8/19

March 8, 2019

REMINDER:  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS IS THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 10TH.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Happy Friday Cory Families!

On Monday, our math team had the opportunity to observe a Math Workshop lesson led by the PEBC.  We had the opportunity to discuss and determine action steps to support every teacher in building their strategies to support productive struggle, student discourse, and tasks that have multiple entry points and ways to solve.  It was a wonderful learning opportunity for our staff.

To support collaboration among our shared campus, teachers from C3, Merrill and Cory had the opportunity to have lunch with each other on Monday.  We appreciate the opportunity to find ways to increase our collaboration as a shared campus.  The leaders of the schools met to discuss more strategic opportunities to bring our schools together.  We are excited to continue this work into next year.

The first grade team met with teachers from Stephen Knight to discuss curriculum, expectations and opportunities for more collaboration.  We have a number of meeting dates scheduled and look forward to  the work with Stephen Knight.

This month’s PSF focus is grit.  We want students to understand that grit is the ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. This kind of passion is not about intense emotions or infatuation. It’s about having direction and commitment for short and long term goals. When you have this kind of passion, you can stay committed to a task that may be difficult or boring.  We look forward to exploring this idea with students this month!

Have a wonderful weekend and please let me know if you have questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,

Joan Wieser

A NOTE ON INTERNET SAFETY
A Note on Internet Safety (source: CommonSenseMedia.org)
Internet safety goes way beyond protecting kids from strangers or blocking inappropriate content. It’s about helping your kids use the Internet productively and practice safe, responsible online behavior – especially when you’re not there to answer their questions or check in on where they’ve ventured. Keep in mind that what may seem like basic knowledge to parents is new to kids just getting started in the digital world. Having a conversation before your kid embarks online helps set expectations and establish ground rules. Here are the basic guidelines to share with your kid:

  • Follow your family’s rules about when and where to use the Internet.
  •  Be polite, kind, and respectful.
  • Understand a website’s rules, and know how to flag other users for misbehavior.
  • Recognize “red flags,” including someone asking you personal questions such as your name and address.
  • Never share your name, your school’s name, your age, your phone number, or your email or home address with strangers.
  • Never send pictures to strangers.
  • Keep passwords private (except from parents).
  • Never open a message from a stranger; it may contain a virus that can harm a computer.
  • Immediately tell an adult if something mean or creepy happens.
