PARENT POST – 2/8/19

February 8, 2019

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Cory Community,

DPS and the DCTA were unable to come to agreement over the past week. As a result, teachers may strike  on Monday, Feb. 11. See the most recent letter from the superintendent here.

At Cory, the primary focus is student safety and social/emotional wellness during this difficult time.  My hope that each of us keep students in mind and model the values that Cory has worked so hard to create.  We want everyone in our community to feel safe to express their opinions and still support one another.

As a leadership team we have expressed our support for all our teachers and the difficult decisions they may have to make should a strike occur. We have asked the staff to support one another and recognize the difficult decisions each have to make for themselves and their families.  All non-teaching staff will be in attendance.

We know that many of you in our parent community may experience similar feelings, and understand the difficult decision you must make for your family. We know that many of you want to stand with teachers, while others would like to volunteer in the school during this time. We fully support any decision you make as family members. We know the Cory teachers also support whatever decision you make.

We remain committed to our primary goal, which is always the safety and well-being of the students. Below is some information about what to expect during a strike:

General information:

  • Cory will remain open with normal school hours, unless otherwise announced.
  • Lunch will be served to all students in attendance.
  • We will maintain nursing services in the building.
  • All community partner visits will be cancelled during a strike.
  • Both Discovery Link and Enrichment will continue as planned. Watch for additional information from them.
  • All other after-school activities will be canceled during a strike.
  • School tours will be canceled.
  • Please read the DPS Family Resource Guide and FAQ document.

Attendance:
We understand that for many reasons students may not be present. Thus, all students who are not present will be marked excused in our system.

Morning arrival:

  • We will have adult supervision at Kiss and Go
  • We will guide students directly into the building to their morning classrooms.
  • There will be no morning playground time. Please have students arrive on time to line-up on the black top. For the safety of our students and to minimize the impact this may have on our students, we are asking families to continue with the normal routine and drop their students off at the playground and not escort them into the building.  I will send communication if any of the systems change for drop-off and pick-up.

Afternoon departure:

  • We will continue to walk kiss-n-go students outside as normal with a school leader and support staff.
  • Discovery Link and Enrichment will operate as normal.
  • If you normally pick up your child on the playground, please continue with that routine. You will need to greet (check-in) with the guest teacher to check-out your child.  All students not picked up by 3:40 will be brought into the office for parent check-out.

Staffing:

  • The building will be staffed by Mrs. Wieser, Mrs. TenCate, the office staff, para-professionals, guest teachers, community volunteers and DPS support staff.
  • All community volunteers will have passed a background check with DPS.

As school leaders, we also need to do our best to provide the safest school environment possible for our students. Should you want to volunteer please reach out to Joan or Liz.

Student learning:

  • We are committed to following classroom routines and structures as much as possible.
  • We are working to ensure special rotations operate on the normal schedule.
  • We know it’s nearly impossible to replace the work our teachers do in this situation, but we are committed to help our students continue to grow and learn as much as possible.
  • If we need to make any modifications, we will send out communication.

More information from Superintendent Susana Cordova can be found at teacherstrike.dpsk12.org. We will be in classrooms during the day and returning emails and phone calls when available to do so.  We appreciate your cooperation and understanding! We are a strong community that can handle any situation and thank you for your continued partnership.

Best,

Joan
