PARENT POST 10/12/18

October 12, 2018

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you all who came to Walk to School Day! We are so excited that South High School Marching Band and Cheerleaders joined us for the day along with our City Councilman Paul Kashman and Mayor Micheal Hancock.  Thank you to all the families that supported, organized and participated in Walk to School Day!  A huge thank you to Alison Durnavich for heading this event.

Tuesday’s presentation on Raising Media Smart Kids was very informative and helpful for families.  The presentation will be sent out to the Thank you Dawn Miller for organizing an informative evening for families!

Our First Friday assembly was this week.  We are so proud of our students and celebrated our Personal Success Factor of self-control last month.  We kicked off our new focus which is curiosity.  We discussed with students how curiosity impacts our lives.  It was great to hear so many students share how they want to make change in this world!

Facilities Update:

  • Water dispenser filters on drinking fountains will be replaced soon.  The new filters have been ordered.  We are awaiting their arrival.
  • The thorns in the field will be sprayed during a non contact student day due to safety concerns.
  • There are new signs in the parking lot to keep the flow of traffic safe and a ‘No Dog’ sign has been posted by the field.
  • Please do not stop on the street to drop students off at school because it is a safety concern.  Please take the time to park and ensure the safety of all of our students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Joan

COLD WEATHER REMINDERS

WINTER GEAR:
Please dress your child in warm winter gear, as we only call indoor recess when it is 20 degrees or lower. Otherwise, you can assume your child will be outside playing in the fresh air!  They will need coats, gloves, hats, possibly snow boots, and any other outdoor winter clothing you see fit.

MORNING DROP OFF:
Unless it is below 20 degrees, all students should be dropped off or walk to the blacktop/ playground in the morning. The blacktop and playground are supervised from 8:30-8:45. The morning bell rings at 8:40. Students will line up with their class at this time. Teachers will come out to pick up their students on the blacktop and bring them in to start the day.

RECESS:
When it is 20 degrees or lower, we will have indoor recess inside the Auditorium.  A G-rated movie will be shown to the students.  Students will also have the choice to play Board Games in the Gym. Outdoor temps will be monitored utilizing the Weather Watch Safety Chart.  On outdoor days, students not dressed appropriately for the winter weather will have the chance to call their parents to bring in appropriate clothing.

Why do we give to Friends of Cory?  To give our kids the best educational opportunity possible.

“This school is amazing because it has so many good paras and teachers and a good computer lab.  And I love going to specials everyday!” – Colin W. 3rd Grade

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

It’s time to get cutting and save those Box Tops! Box Tops for Education is a fun and easy way to help Cory! All you have to do is clip Box Tops from products you already buy, such as Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex, Juicy Juice, and many more!  https://www.boxtops4education.com/earn

This year, our goal is to raise $1000 through Box Top collection. This is approximately 30 BoxTops per family. Our first collection deadline is November 1, 2018Between now and October 29th, we are asking each classroom to Feed the Cougar! Collection boxes will be in each classroom, along with a large bin in the office. So gather up any Box Tops you may already have been saving, and send them to school with your children by Monday, October 29th. Our volunteers are expecting to receive thousands of Box Tops, so please make their jobs a little easier by 1) cutting your Box Tops on the dotted lines (great to get the kids to help!) and 2) ensuring none of your Box Tops are expired.

We will have another Box Top collection in the winter, so please continue to cut and save your Box Tops after the Oct 29th collection.

THE CORY TIMES

The first edition of The Cory Times is coming out soon and we’d love for everyone to have a chance to submit an article. It doesn’t even have to be an article! Your children can submit a poem, comic, game, artwork, puzzle or pretty much anything — just run it by myself or Mrs. Hopley first. We’re collecting them through October 19, 2018. Make sure to get their’s in on time!

DESTINATION IMAGINATION
Destination Imagination is Starting Again!!
Hey parents!  We are looking for parent volunteers to be managers of Destination Imagination teams at Cory.  Teams often meet before or after school up until the district and/or STATE competition in the spring.  Managers provide a place and time for teams of 7-8 children so that the students can solved creativity problems together in order to present solutions at the competitions.  It is great fun for children and a really good activity for creative minds.  Parents really only supervise the children and get materials for them if they can.  The students do all the work! Cory has had a really successful program over the years and have sent many teams to STATE and GLOBAL Championships.  If you are finding meaningful ways to be involved with your child’s education, this is really a fantastic program.  Please contact Rainy Laventure (rainy_laventure@dpsk12.org) or Grace Hopley (grace_hopley@dpsk12.org) for further information.  We need team managers!

The quickest and easiest way to sign up for the 5th and 6th Grade Passport Programs is online at coloradoski.com/passport.
